Delicious and nutritious!?

On Nov 1st, Ian and I joined Justin, his brother in law, and another friend on an exhilarating hunt for flying dinners. At first, I was afraid that I'd be a bit of a pansy, afraid to touch the birds, and look like a total girl....but Ian's fears were the ones that were realized: I enjoyed it. So I followed the boys around and helped them scare the pheasants out of the grass. I didn't shoot, mind you. I was afraid of accidentally shooting my husband in the foot- yes it was safest if I didn't hold a gun. I was the human retriever: I helped scare the birds, and then when they landed, I picked them up and carried them to the pile. (...which was a little tricky with some of the resilient birds.)

Anywho, long story short, I decided that today was a great day for pheasant. I pulled the meat out of the freezer and chopped up both fillets into really tiny pieces (last year for my birthday, Ian made me a pheasant dinner, and I...well, my reflex didn't like the texture of the meat, so I gagged. I didn't want that to happen again- hence the tiny pieces.) I have a recipe that I like that uses chicken, and since they are both poultry, I figured it was a good match. I used a breaded lemon and rosemary chicken recipe that goes great with couscous. Voila- lunch! It was quite tasty, but I think I liked the seasoning/flavorings better than the actual bird. Ian liked it and gobbled it down, so maybe I'll make the rest of it into lunch meals for him to enjoy.

The fun part was what Ian found while enjoying his lunch:

Apparently we didn't clean the birds as well as we thought. I'll be honest- this discovery made my original fears a reality: I was totally grossed out! (I guess I am a pansy girl after all.) I mean, yes, I knew where we got the meat before it was in our freezer, but buckshot?! SERIOUSLY?!?! Yuck!!
